From 1st April 2002 all solid fuel appliances, flue linings and hearths must be fitted by a "competent person". A "competent person" is deemed to be installers who have HETAS or NACE registration. In the absence of this registration an installation must be accompanied with an application to the local building control department, along with a fee for inspection of the installation.

At Pete the Sweep we are registered with HETAS so you can be assured that our installations are carried out to the highest standard and meet all current regulations. All our stoves are fitted to last, and to facilitate proper, efficient cleaning. Where possible we like to avoid a flat registry plate, which tends to gather piles of soot which cannot be removed following sweeping. A registry plate also tends to crack at the edges with use, resulting in soot falling onto the hearth. If the situation is suitable, we endeavour to seal the stove pipe into the flue with a minimum of 100 mm depth of cement which is properly flaunched (sloping) into the stove pipe to ensure all soot can be removed following sweeping.

Where appropriate, we advocate the fitting of a soot door above the stove, preferably on an outside wall if possible. This allows us to fit the stove much better and facilitates sweeping using the appropriate sized brush on larger chimneys. It also allows us to sweep without the need to dismantle the interior of the firebox of the stove, which can result in it being necessary to replace fire bricks if they have become cracked.

Prices:

Subject to a site survey, we normally charge a set price of £225 to fit a stove, and £125 to supply and fit a soot door. If we are installing both at the same time we offer a £50 discount. If you are also buying a stove from us we offer a further £50 discount. Our stove fitting price does not include stove pipes, or additional requirements such as a new hearth, but we do supply all these elements and would be happy to quote for them.
